Kenneth James was serving a life sentence
for a murder conviction out of Jefferson County. According to his mother, Capri James, he had been the target of an attack by a group of fellow inmates months before his death. She alleges that this assault was instigated by a belief that her son had flirted with a female correctional officer who was romantically involved with one of the assailants. Following the attack, James was placed in solitary confinement, a move his mother says he pleaded to be removed from.
The official word from the Jefferson County Coroner's office initially stated that there were no signs of foul play or trauma on Kenneth James's body. However, his mother tells a different story, one pieced together from conversations with other incarcerated individuals. She firmly believes that her son was poisoned with fentanyl-laced drugs by other inmates. Capri James also noted that her son had been suffering from head trauma and headaches since the earlier assault, which she believes could have contributed to his death.
In the days following his death, his mother relentlessly sought answers from the prison, encountering a wall of silence before his death was officially confirmed. The Alabama Department of Corrections has stated that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is ongoing. To date, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in connection with the death of Kenneth James. His mother continues to voice her belief that he was murdered, leaving a cloud of suspicion over his final moments.
