On the evening of July 12, 2008, 15-year-old African American male Derrick Mixon was fatally shot multiple times just a block from his family's home in East Oakland, California. At the time, Derrick was a student at Castlemont Business and Information Technology School. The shooting occurred in a neighborhood known for its high crime rates, and while police initiated an investigation, no suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests were reported in connection with his death.
