Tyler Mitchell, a 26-year-old Black man, was shot and killed in Oakland, California, on the evening of June 29, 2024. The incident took place around 7 p.m. on the 8400 block of Edes Avenue, where Mitchell was unloading groceries from his parked vehicle.
According to authorities, a man pulled up in a sedan and engaged in a brief conversation with Mitchell. The man then drew a pistol and shot Mitchell at least once.
After Mitchell fell to the ground, the assailant struck him several times with the firearm. A woman who was with Mitchell was also wounded during the attack but survived. Emergency responders transported Mitchell to Highland Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, and he was pronounced dead there.
The Oakland Police Department launched an investigation, utilizing witness statements and video surveillance to piece together the events. Mitchell’s girlfriend, who witnessed the shooting, initially told police she did not recognize the person responsible. However, investigators later found that she had previously shared an address in Concord with the man they would identify as the prime suspect.
Relying on surveillance footage and cellphone records that placed him near the scene, police identified 21-year-old Paris William as the suspect. On September 9, 2024, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged William with murder and carrying a loaded, concealed firearm. At the time, William remained at large and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
In late September 2024, a U.S. Marshals task force tracked William to Louisiana, where he was arrested. As of the end of September 2024, William was being held without bail and was in the process of being extradited to the Bay Area to face the charges against him.
