Brian Bole, a 30-year-old NASA scientist and health data analyst, was tragically shot and killed in Oakland, California, on April 10, 2016. The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. as Bole was walking towards his residence on Richmond Boulevard after leaving the Kingfish Pub & Cafe. As he made his way home, he was approached by an unknown individual who fatally shot him and then fled the area.
Neighbors reported hearing gunshots and discovered Bole on the ground, noting that he had a gunshot wound to the forehead. Despite having an earbud in, Bole's wallet was not taken, leading investigators to consider both robbery and other motives for the crime.
Bole's murder remained unsolved for years, with the FBI offering a $20,000 reward for any information that could lead to an arrest, and an additional $10,000 reward offered by Oakland Crime Stoppers. Surveillance footage captured a potential suspect in a reflective coat near the crime scene, and two persons of interest were identified: one was described as a Black male in a blue shirt and hat, while the other’s identity remained unclear. Authorities also highlighted a vehicle of interest—a white Chevy Malibu—which was seen near the location around the time of the shooting. Despite multiple interviews and investigative efforts, the case remains open, and police continue to urge the public for any information that could help bring Bole's killer to justice.
Bole was not only an accomplished scientist who had completed a NASA fellowship at Ames Research Center and held a doctorate in electrical engineering, but he was also described by his family as a passionate individual who loved exploring the outdoors and enjoying local culture. His murder shocked the community, particularly given his dedication to improving healthcare through data science. To this day, law enforcement officials emphasize the importance of any small detail that may help solve the case, hoping to bring closure to Bole's grieving family.
