Diane Mary Kimar-Luman was remembered as a strong, hard-working, wise, witty, and kind woman who found beauty in nature and simple things. A dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, Diane, 56, was married to the love of her life, Wayne Luman. Together they enjoyed traveling, beekeeping, line dancing, and crafting. She had a special love for Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where she grew up, and found peace walking the shores of Lake Superior, collecting rocks and beach glass for her crafts. Born in November 1969 in Munising, she graduated from Munising High School in 1987 before earning degrees from Northern Michigan University and Central Michigan University. For 30 years, she was a beloved educator at Greenville Public Schools, and even after retiring, she cherished the friendships she had made with the staff at Cedar Crest Elementary School. In a recent reflection after losing her brother and cousin, she said, “The world is still beautiful and the sun still rises. Love your people well. We are not promised tomorrow.”

On the morning of October 15, 2026, Diane was in the kitchen of her home in Algoma Township, near Sparta, Michigan, with her 30-year-old son, Ryan Hansen. Hansen had been living at the home on the 1200 block of Indian Lakes Road for about two weeks after being evicted from his apartment. Around 9:15 a.m., Diane’s husband heard loud noises he soon realized were gunshots. He ran to the kitchen and found his wife on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds. He immediately called 911. First responders arrived to find Diane deceased at the scene.

Family members inside the home told responding Kent County Sheriff’s Office deputies that Hansen was the shooter and had fled in his blue Chevrolet Suburban. The sheriff's office and Michigan State Police began a search of the area. A short time later, Hansen’s vehicle broke down near Ritchie Avenue and 14 Mile Road, about ten minutes from the home. He borrowed a stranger’s phone and left a voicemail for his father, Derrick Hansen. The message reportedly said, "Hey, I don't know what's going on this morning. My phone's dead. I broke down. Give me a call." His father, who had already been notified of Diane’s death, described his son’s tone in the message as “super calm.”

After his car broke down, Hansen called for a rideshare. An undercover detective spotted him as he was getting into the other vehicle, and he was taken into custody without incident. A search of his vehicle uncovered a holstered Glock 17, a magazine holder, and a safe containing an AK-47 rifle. Investigators also found multiple spent bullet casings at the home.

According to court documents, family members told police that Hansen had not spoken to his mother for several years before moving in with her. He reportedly held a grudge against her for perceived wrongdoings during his childhood and would call her "evil." He had told his family he wanted to "live off grid" due to a distrust of the government and a belief in conspiracy theories. His family said he owned a number of guns and carried a black handgun everywhere.

Ryan Hansen was arraigned on one count of open murder and one count of felony firearm. He was denied bond and is being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility. His next court date was scheduled for October 28, 2026. The investigation by the Kent County Sheriff's Office was ongoing as of late October 2026.

A visitation for Diane was held on October 24, 2026, at MKD Funeral Home in Belmont, followed by a time of sharing and remembrance. Another service was planned for November 1 in her hometown of Munising. In her memory, her family requested that donations be made to the Greenville Area Community Foundation Memorial Gifts Fund or the Alger County Animal Shelter.
