In the early morning hours of a Monday in Philadelphia, a devastating sequence of events claimed the lives of Gabby Turner and her adoptive mother, Sadie Turner. Gabby, a young woman in her early 20s, lived with her family in the city’s Cedarbrook neighborhood, a community later shaken by the violence that unfolded.
The tragedy began before 4 a.m. on October 12, 2026, when Philadelphia firefighters and police were dispatched to a house fire on the 8200 block of Williams Avenue.
Inside the burning home, first responders made a horrifying discovery. Gabby and 78-year-old Sadie Turner were found suffering from gunshot wounds to the head. Emergency crews rushed both women to Albert Einstein Medical Center, but their injuries were too severe, and both were pronounced dead. Investigators determined that the fire, which was brought under control by about 4:30 a.m., had been intentionally set in the kitchen after the shootings.
Family members identified the suspect as Lonnie Turner, Sadie’s 26-year-old adopted son and Gabby’s biological brother, who also lived at the residence. Relatives told reporters that Lonnie had been released from jail just months before the incident. After shooting his mother and sister and setting the fire, he fled the home.
About an hour after the fire was reported, around 5 a.m., police received a call about an armed man on a SEPTA Route 18 bus nearly five miles away in the Fox Chase neighborhood. At the end of the route, near Oxford and Loney Streets, Lonnie Turner refused to exit the vehicle. He reportedly told the bus driver he had shot two people and instructed the driver to call the police. The driver and another passenger were able to get off the bus safely, leaving Lonnie barricaded inside alone.
The incident triggered a massive police response, including SWAT teams, who shut down the area for most of the day. For nearly 12 hours, negotiators worked to persuade Lonnie to surrender peacefully. Witnesses heard police trying to de-escalate the situation, asking SWAT officers to lower their weapons to make him feel more comfortable. The lengthy standoff paralyzed the normally quiet neighborhood, with residents and business owners watching the tense scene unfold.
Shortly before 5 p.m., the standoff came to a tragic end when Lonnie Turner died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. With the death of the sole suspect, the investigation into the murders of Gabby and Sadie Turner was effectively closed.
The violence left family members reeling from the loss of three relatives in one day. One cousin, speaking to reporters, mourned the loss of her grandmother and her sister. Neighbors on Williams Avenue expressed their shock and sadness, describing their block as a close-knit community where everyone knew each other. One resident stated that the entire block was shaken by the tragedy that had occurred right across the street. Police did not release a motive for the killings.
