Felicity Marie VanAtta, a 23-year-old woman from Salem, New Jersey, tragically lost her life on October 8, 2024, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred around 12:30 AM outside a store in the Kensington area of Philadelphia. VanAtta was fatally shot in the chest by a stray bullet, becoming an innocent victim of an argument that had spilled onto the street.
The Philadelphia Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the shooting.
Through video evidence, they identified 29-year-old Spencer Majett as the primary suspect in VanAtta's death. Authorities obtained a warrant for Majett's arrest in the days following the homicide.
On October 29, 2024, approximately three weeks after the fatal shooting, two alert Philadelphia police officers on routine patrol in Kensington spotted Majett, who was actively being sought for arrest. When the officers attempted to stop him, Majett fled, leading to a foot chase. The pursuit went up Reach Street and into an alleyway between Custer and Reach Streets.
During the chase, a confrontation occurred between Majett and the two police officers. Majett was reportedly armed with a .40 caliber firearm. The situation escalated, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. Both officers discharged their weapons, striking Majett in the shoulder. He was subsequently taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
Following the incident, Spencer Majett was charged with murder in connection with Felicity VanAtta's death. Additionally, he faces two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, two counts of aggravated assault, and other related charges.
The two police officers involved in the shooting, both with one year of service on the force, were placed on administrative duty pending an internal affairs investigation. The Philadelphia Police Department credited the officers' work in apprehending the murder suspect and removing him from the streets.
