A night out with friends at a neighborhood bar in Gresham, Oregon, turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of Hassan Smith, a 25-year-old man, and left two others wounded. The sudden and fatal shooting left a community in shock and a family grieving an unimaginable loss.
The incident unfolded late on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the VN Bar N Grill, a local establishment in a commercial area in the 1700 block of Northwest Fairview Drive.
Shortly before 11:00 p.m., gunfire erupted inside the bar. When Gresham police officers arrived, they found three men had been shot. Hassan Smith sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The two other victims were identified as 25-year-old Quincy Ng and Demarco Streeter, who was 40. Both were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries but were expected to survive.
The suspected shooter fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. The investigation was quickly taken over by the East County Major Crimes Team. In the initial days, police did not release any information about a potential motive for the shooting or whether the victims knew their attacker. Authorities stated that they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the wider community.
The area of Northwest Fairview Drive and Burnside Street, where the shooting occurred, is a busy district with numerous businesses and is near Gresham High School. The violence was a shock to those who live and work nearby. One local resident told a news outlet that he was surprised by the incident because he had always felt genuinely safe in the neighborhood.
In the wake of the tragedy, the VN Bar N Grill closed its doors temporarily. The business released a statement on its Facebook page expressing its sorrow. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that have brought heartbreak to our Gresham community,” the post read. “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones who are facing unimaginable loss, as well as everyone whose lives have been affected by this tragedy. No words can take away the pain and the grief they are experiencing.” The bar called the shooting a "senseless act of violence" and promised to "reflect, learn, and take meaningful steps toward ensuring that VN bar and Grill remains a place where people can come together.”
As of late October 2026, the investigation into Hassan Smith's murder remains active and ongoing. No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not released a description of any suspects. It is not publicly known what transpired inside the bar that led to the shooting.
Detectives with the East County Major Crimes Team continue to seek information from the public that could lead to an arrest. They are asking anyone who may have been at the VN Bar N Grill that night or has any knowledge of the incident to come forward.
