Fredrick “Freddie” Almanza III, a loving and dedicated son, father, brother, and loyal friend, was remembered for his kindness, strength, and unwavering loyalty. The 45-year-old male gave his love without hesitation and stood by the people he cared for through every season of life. His mother recalled his smile, laughter, and voice, stating, “Freddie, your life mattered. You mattered. You were loved more than words could ever explain, and you will never be forgotten.” In a message to her son, she wrote, “You may be gone from my sight, but you will never be gone from my heart. I love you yesterday, today, tomorrow, and for all eternity.”

On the evening of Saturday, October 3, 2026, Fredrick’s life was tragically cut short in Corpus Christi, Texas. At approximately 5:56 p.m., officers from the Corpus Christi Police Department were dispatched to the 3800 block of Marion Street following a report of a shooting. When they arrived at the residence, they found Fredrick on the front porch, lying in a large amount of blood. He had sustained multiple shotgun wounds. Personnel from the Corpus Christi Fire Department arrived soon after and pronounced him dead at the scene.

The shooter had fled on foot before police arrived. Robbery Homicide detectives were called to the scene to investigate. Using information from witnesses and surveillance video, officers began searching the area where the suspect was last seen heading. They soon located a man matching the suspect’s description in the 4500 block of Weber Road. The man, identified as 45-year-old Alex Borrego, was detained and taken to the police department’s main station for questioning.

During an interview with homicide detectives, Borrego willingly spoke and admitted to shooting Fredrick Almanza. Following his confession, Alex Borrego was arrested and charged with murder. He was booked into the city detention center, and his bail was set at $1 million. The Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office later officially ruled Fredrick's death a homicide caused by shotgun wounds.

Police did not immediately release information about a possible motive for the shooting or the relationship between Borrego and Almanza. The investigation was described as active and ongoing in the days following the arrest. Authorities encouraged anyone with information to contact the CCPD Criminal Investigations Division at 361-886-2840 or to submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
