Tayvon Moses Austin, a 22-year-old male remembered by his loved ones as a caring counselor to those in need, had his life tragically cut short just a week after his birthday. His family described him as a cherished son, grandson, brother, and nephew, mourning that while they needed him on Earth, he was needed more in Heaven.
The fatal encounter occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
Tayvon and a 21-year-old friend had made arrangements to sell a vehicle in Cleveland, Ohio. They met the prospective buyers in the 1000 block of East 71st Street in the city's St. Clair-Superior neighborhood. The meeting, however, was a setup for a robbery. According to the Cleveland Division of Police, at about 5:30 p.m., several unknown male suspects attempted to rob the two men, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
In the chaotic moments that followed the shooting, the vehicle Tayvon was in fled the scene, crashing through a fence and slamming into an occupied house on nearby East 68th Street. A resident of the home recalled hearing about a dozen gunshots followed by a "big bang." The impact of the crash was significant, shifting the garage and a portion of the house. When neighbors rushed outside, they discovered the damaged property and the wrecked car. Fortunately, no one inside the home was injured in the crash.
Cleveland police officers arrived to a grim scene. They located Tayvon's 21-year-old companion in a nearby field, suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. He was transported to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition. Inside the crashed vehicle, officers found Tayvon unconscious, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was in critical condition. Emergency medical services rushed him to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Tayvon Moses Austin succumbed to his injuries the next day, on September 30, 2026.
The Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit launched an investigation into the deadly shooting. Detectives confirmed that the incident began as a robbery attempt that escalated into a shootout. A firearm was recovered by investigators at the scene of the crime. In the days following the shooting, police had not released any descriptions of suspects or persons of interest and no arrests had been made.
In the wake of their devastating loss, Tayvon's family was left to plan his final arrangements. A GoFundMe was organized to assist with funeral expenses. A viewing was held on Friday, October 16, at the Pernel Jones & Sons Funeral Home. His funeral service took place the following day, Saturday, October 17, at the East Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
As of early October 2026, the investigation into Tayvon Austin's murder remains active and ongoing. Authorities have not announced any arrests or publicly identified any suspects in the case. The family continues to seek answers and justice for the violent act that took a beloved young man from his community.
