Vartan Nazareth Mardirosian was 69 years old when he died on Wednesday, May 10, 2000, in Altadena. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 1631 N. Allen Ave. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau case.

He was a white man who was approaching his 70th birthday. A website that republishes coroner's listings gives his date of birth as July 15, 1930, and says he died at a residence, under coroner's case number 2000-03422. Beyond those details, almost nothing about Vartan Mardirosian has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. His full name is an uncommon one, and the only other people found with similar names appear in church bulletins and newsletters on the East Coast, with nothing to connect them to him.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was attacked by someone he knew or by a stranger, whether a robbery or a dispute was involved, or whether anyone saw what happened. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the residence or later at a hospital, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect. The listing that he died at a residence suggests that he was hurt indoors or on the property, which may mean the attack happened in a home, possibly his own, though the record does not say so.

The killing of a man nearly 70 years old inside a home is the kind of crime that usually draws attention from neighbors, and in a quiet residential community it would have been unusual.

Altadena is an unincorporated community at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, directly north of Pasadena. Because it is not a city, it is policed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. It is known for tree-lined streets, older houses on large lots and views of the mountains, and for decades it has been a mixed, middle-class community with a long history of Black homeownership. In January 2025 the Eaton fire swept through much of Altadena and destroyed thousands of homes, scattering many longtime residents who may have remembered the neighborhood as it was in 2000.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest. The death of a 69-year-old man in his Altadena neighborhood does not appear to have drawn any news coverage.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Vartan Nazareth Mardirosian could be found in news archives or public records. More than 25 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who lived on or near North Allen Avenue in May 2000, or who knew him, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
