Yee Wah Chan was 49 years old when she died on Sunday, June 11, 2000, in Alhambra. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, she died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 2711 W. Carlos Ave. Her death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau case.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report recorded her death in a short entry drawn from coroner's records. It gave her name, her age, the date, the address and the cause of death. No statement from investigators, no family comment and no follow-up news story about her could be found.

Beyond her name, her age and the place where she died, almost nothing about Yee Wah Chan has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. She surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who she was, but none of that has entered the public record.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether she was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day she was hurt, whether she died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

Searches for her name return people-search listings and records for other people named Yee Wah Chan or Yee Chan in California, Texas, New York and elsewhere. Chan is one of the most common surnames among Chinese families, and the name Yee Wah is shared by many people, so none of that material can be tied to the woman who died in June 2000 without more information.

The address given for her death is a residential street, which may suggest that she was hurt in or near a home, though the record does not say whether she lived there. That the Sheriff's Department, rather than the Alhambra Police Department, handles the case may mean the address lies in an unincorporated pocket of the area or that the department was asked to take the investigation, but the public record does not explain it.

Alhambra is a city in the western San Gabriel Valley, just east of Los Angeles, known for its Main Street business district, its tree-lined residential neighborhoods and its many restaurants. It sits among neighboring communities such as Monterey Park, San Gabriel and San Marino.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest. There is no public sign of what direction detectives took in this case.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Yee Wah Chan could be found in news archives or public records. More than 25 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible.

Anyone who lived on or near Carlos Avenue in the Alhambra area in June 2000, or who knew a 49-year-old woman named Yee Wah Chan, may hold information that never reached investigators. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
