On Wednesday, June 30, 2010, ninety-four-year-old Winnona Packer Lewis died under suspicious circumstances in the San Gabriel Valley city of Alhambra, California. Lewis, an elderly white woman, was residing at 214 South Atlantic Boulevard, the site of Atherton Baptist Homes, a prominent and long-standing continuing care retirement community in the city. Following her death, county officials and investigators were notified, initiating an inquiry into the events leading to the loss of her life.

The location where Lewis died sits in a bustling commercial and residential corridor of Alhambra, characterized by churches, tree-lined suburban blocks, and extensive care services for aging residents. Atherton Baptist Homes had operated on the spacious South Atlantic Boulevard property for decades, offering levels of service ranging from independent living cottages to skilled nursing facilities. The death of an elder within a dedicated residential community was referred to outside authorities for an official evaluation.

Upon examination, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner evaluated the circumstances surrounding Lewis's demise. While the official cause of death was cataloged in public coroner records under the broad category of other, the coroner determined that the manner of death was homicide. Despite the ruling that her life was taken through an intentional or unlawful act, authorities did not release further anatomical findings, toxicology details, or specific descriptions of the physical trauma involved.

The Alhambra Police Department took jurisdiction over the investigation into Lewis's death. Detectives faced substantial investigative hurdles from the beginning, as crimes involving elderly residents in care facilities often depend heavily on internal logs, medical assessments, and caregiver interviews. Law enforcement did not release any physical descriptions of potential perpetrators, nor did they disclose whether the fatal act stemmed from an outsider, a fellow resident, or someone charged with elder care.

Throughout 2010, the broader Los Angeles metropolitan area witnessed hundreds of homicides, though deaths ruled homicides among nonagenarians in assisted facilities remained exceptionally unusual. Neither the Alhambra Police Department nor the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department released public appeals, sketch drawings, or monetary reward announcements in connection with Lewis's case, resulting in minimal media attention outside of formal coroner logging. No suspects were ever named or taken into custody.

More than a decade after her passing, the homicide of Winnona Packer Lewis remains officially open and unsolved. Key questions regarding who was present at the scene and what precisely transpired inside the facility on June 30, 2010, have never been answered publicly. Investigators continue to maintain the case on the roster of unresolved homicides in Los Angeles County, dependent on archival review or potential new disclosures to finally establish accountability.
