Daniel Hinojosa was 53 years old when he died on Thursday, January 22, 2009, in Lancaster. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 1426 Boyden Ave. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department case.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report recorded his death in a single sentence: Daniel Hinojosa, "a 53-year-old Latino male," died that Thursday "after sustaining blunt force trauma in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records." The entry gave no account of what happened to him, and no follow-up appears to have been published. The coroner listed a street address, which may mean he was hurt at or near a home, though the record does not say so.

Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Daniel Hinojosa has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

Daniel Hinojosa is a common name, and searches turn up many other men who share it, including a minor league baseball player born in Mexico, a chef in Texas, men sentenced in Texas courts and an early Texas Ranger. None of those records is connected to the 53-year-old man who died in Lancaster in 2009, and that makes the trail harder for anyone trying to learn more about him.

Lancaster is the largest city in the Antelope Valley, in the high desert of northern Los Angeles County, and it is a long drive over the mountains from downtown Los Angeles. The city grew rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s as families moved north in search of more affordable housing, and many residents commute long distances to work. Lancaster contracts with the Sheriff's Department for police services, and the Lancaster Station handles patrol in the city while the Homicide Bureau investigates killings there.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Daniel Hinojosa could be found in news archives or public records. More than 16 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Someone who lived on or near Boyden Avenue in Lancaster in January 2009 may remember Daniel Hinojosa, may have heard about a fight or an assault there that week, or may know who he lived with or spent time with. Family members and old friends may also know details that were never shared with investigators. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
