On the morning of Sunday, September 19, 2010, fifty-six-year-old Erasmo Amaral was working his routine shift as an independent taxi driver in Los Angeles County. Born in Tuxpan, Nayarit, Mexico, Amaral had dedicated more than fifteen years of his life to driving a cab to provide for his family. Respected by peers and deeply devoted to his wife and five children, he was known among loved ones for his warm presence, quick smile, and conversational nature. His work frequently took him across the patchwork of neighborhoods comprising southeast Los Angeles County, where cabbies regularly navigated isolated late-night pickups and early-morning fares.

That Sunday morning, Amaral encountered a fare who intended to rob and carjack him along a residential street near Jackson Avenue in the city of Lynwood. According to investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau, the confrontation escalated quickly into violence when the suspect attempted to take control of the vehicle. Amaral resisted, refusing to surrender the taxicab that served as his livelihood, and became trapped or held on desperately to the moving car.

Startled residents and witnesses along the street looked on in horror as the cab sped down the roadway with Amaral clinging to the window frame on the driver's side. Behind the wheel, the assailant accelerated recklessly, attempting to dislodge Amaral from the exterior of the taxi. In an aggressive effort to break his grip, the driver sideswiped three parked vehicles along the curb, violently crushing Amaral against the parked cars before coming to a sudden halt.

The impact threw Amaral onto the pavement, leaving him critically injured. Immediately following the collision, the suspect abandoned the damaged cab, climbed out of the vehicle, and fled on foot into the surrounding neighborhood. First responders from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and county paramedics rushed to the scene, where they discovered Amaral lying unresponsive in the street next to his taxi. Paramedics evaluated his severe trauma, but his injuries proved catastrophic, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff's homicide detectives, including Detective Bob Kenney, launched an immediate investigation into the deadly encounter. Investigators processed the taxicab and the damaged parked vehicles for fingerprints, biological evidence, and ballistic or physical signs of struggle, while canvassing local residents along the street for any eyewitness accounts or surveillance video. Authorities determined that robbery was likely the primary motive in the carjacking, but the assailant had vanished without leaving behind any immediate trail or identifiable direction of flight.

In 2010, Los Angeles County experienced hundreds of homicides, with numerous fatal encounters linked to robberies and carjackings across South Los Angeles and the Gateway Cities. Amaral's death was mourned deeply by his extended family and the local taxi-driving community, who recognized the severe risks everyday drivers faced while serving the public. Despite public appeals urging anyone with information to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau, the suspect has never been publicly identified or apprehended. More than a decade later, the killing of Erasmo Amaral remains an open and unsolved homicide.
