Santos Vendama was 53 years old when he died on Sunday, July 9, 2006, in Lynwood. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 5985 Florence Ave. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department case.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report recorded his death in a single sentence drawn from coroner's records. It gave his age, listed him as a white man, and placed his death in Lynwood. It did not say how he was hurt, who found him, whether he lived nearby or whether investigators had any idea who was responsible.

Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Santos Vendama has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. His surname is an unusual one, yet searches for it turned up no other record of him at all, not even a namesake, which suggests he left very little trace in the places where such information is usually kept.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

That silence does not mean nobody knew him. A 53-year-old man on a city street in the middle of summer was almost certainly known to someone, whether a relative, a coworker, a landlord or a neighbor who saw him most days.

Lynwood is a small, densely built city in the southeastern part of Los Angeles County, near Compton and South Gate. It is largely a community of working families, with modest single-family homes, apartment buildings and busy commercial streets. The city does not have its own police force and relies on the Sheriff's Department, which is why Santos Vendama's death became a Sheriff's Homicide Bureau case. Florence Avenue is one of the long east-west corridors that cross this part of the county, lined with homes, shops and small businesses.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Santos Vendama could be found in news archives or public records. More than 19 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who lived, worked or spent time near the 5900 block of Florence Avenue in Lynwood in July 2006, or who knew a 53-year-old man named Santos Vendama, may hold information that could help. Even knowing where he lived, who his family were or how he spent his days could give investigators a place to start. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
