Jose Anthony Elortegui, a 29-year-old resident of Lynwood, California, was tragically shot and killed on March 7, 2017. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Elortegui was walking near his home in the 5100 block of Beechwood Avenue around 7:45 p.m. when a vehicle, possibly a white SUV, approached him. The passenger in the front seat of the vehicle began shooting at Elortegui, who continued walking west for a short distance before collapsing on the sidewalk near Beechwood and
Virginia avenues. A passerby found him bleeding and called 911, but Elortegui was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:55 p.m. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest, and numerous shell casings were found at the scene.
Elortegui lived with his grandmother and sister and was known to keep to himself, avoiding involvement with the gangs in his neighborhood. Investigators believe that his shooting might have been a case of mistaken identity, as Elortegui was not a gang member. Despite the thorough investigation, the authorities have not identified any suspects or established a clear motive for the shooting. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau has urged anyone with information to come forward, but as of now, the case remains unsolved.
