A simmering family tension erupted into deadly violence on a Saturday morning in Saint Paul, Minnesota, leaving 27-year-old DeMarcus Gibson-Beard dead from a gunshot wound to the head. The fatal encounter, which took place on August 29, 2026, was not the result of a long-planned act but rather a spontaneous and tragic escalation of a mundane argument over moving a television. Gibson-Beard had arrived at his mother's apartment on Park Street with his fiancée to drop off the television. An argument ignited when Gibson-Beard asked his sister's boyfriend, 20-year-old Alvin James Smith, for help bringing the TV inside. Witnesses reported that Smith took the request as a sign of disrespect, sparking a verbal dispute that quickly turned physical.
The argument was layered with pre-existing family grievances. Gibson-Beard's mother later told police about ongoing tensions within the household. She had repeatedly asked her daughter and Smith, who were living with her, to move out, but they had refused. Gibson-Beard's fiancée stated that the argument also touched on the fact that Smith was living in his mother's home without contributing to the bills. As the fight moved from outside into the living room, family members, including Gibson-Beard's mother and fiancée, attempted to de-escalate the situation. The victim's mother tried to hold her son back, but Smith reportedly continued to advance. At some point during the physical altercation, Smith produced a handgun and fired a single shot, striking Gibson-Beard in the face. His fiancée recalled hearing a "pop" and seeing smoke near his head as he fell to the floor.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, a panicked Alvin James Smith reportedly exclaimed, "I'm going to jail," before fleeing the apartment with the weapon. He ran to a nearby wooded area, hid under a vehicle, and called a friend and a cousin, telling them he had just killed someone. Smith's girlfriend, who was also Gibson-Beard's sister, called him and, along with officers, convinced him to return to the scene. During the call, Smith expressed that he did not want to go to jail and mentioned that he had an illegal handgun. Upon his return, he was arrested without further incident. In his initial statements to police, Smith claimed that Gibson-Beard had been threatening and had slapped both him and his girlfriend, and that he had retrieved the gun for "protection." He admitted to shooting Gibson-Beard, stating, "I know where I f---ing aimed." Alvin James Smith was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and held at the Ramsey County Jail on $1 million bail. The case against him was set to proceed through the Ramsey County court system, with his first court appearance scheduled for the following Tuesday.
