In the late summer afternoon of August 30, 2026, the life of 17-year-old Edwin José Pulgar Sulbaran was tragically cut short in Austin, Texas. A Hispanic male, Edwin was driving his car in the 1900 block of Woodland Avenue when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 2:58 p.m., and despite the quick response of Austin Police and emergency medical services, Edwin succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:06 p.m. His vehicle, after he was shot, crashed into a nearby fence.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect, 21-year-old Santana Gonzales, also a Hispanic male. According to police reports, Gonzales was on foot when he encountered Edwin's vehicle and fired the fatal shot. Witnesses at the scene described seeing a young man of slender build, in his late teens or early 20s, fleeing the area shortly after they heard gunshots. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Gonzales on September 1, 2026. On September 9, a coordinated effort between the U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and the Austin Police Department SWAT team led to Gonzales's arrest on Skycrest Drive.
Further investigation revealed a troubled history for Santana Gonzales, who was allegedly an active member of the Crips gang. At the time of Edwin's death, Gonzales was already on probation for a 2023 case that initially included three counts of aggravated robbery with a firearm. Those charges were ultimately reduced, and he received probation instead of a prison sentence. In the months leading up to the fatal shooting, Gonzales was also a suspect in other violent incidents. Ballistic analysis linked the firearm used to kill Edwin to two other shootings in July and August 2026, one of which involved shots being fired into a home following threats over an ex-girlfriend.
