Douglas John Kantor, a 25-year-old man from Airmont, New York, tragically lost his life on June 12, 2021, in a mass shooting on Austin's Sixth Street. Kantor, who was visiting Austin from Michigan, was shot through the abdomen just below the rib cage and succumbed to his injuries at Dell Seton Medical Center. He was set to marry his high school sweetheart of 10 years and had recently completed his master's degree in business while working in the IT department at Ford Motor Company.
The
shooting, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, left at least 14 people injured, including Kantor. Austin police identified a 19-year-old man, De’ondre White, as the suspect responsible for Kantor's death. White was arrested two days after the shooting in Killeen, Texas, and was charged with murder. Ballistics evidence linked the fatal shot to White's weapon. The Travis County District Attorney's office also intended to seek multiple aggravated assault charges against White.
Initially, two juveniles were arrested in connection with the shooting, but charges against them were later dropped as ballistics evidence confirmed that White was the shooter. The incident stemmed from an argument between two groups of teenagers from Killeen, Texas. The Austin Police Department and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission conducted a TRACE investigation to further understand the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The loss of Douglas John Kantor has deeply affected his family, friends, and the community. His brother, Nick Kantor, described Douglas as a motivated individual with an infectious smile who was loved by all who knew him. Mayor Steve Adler and other city officials expressed their condolences and emphasized the need to prevent such tragedies in the future.
