In the late afternoon of September 2, 2024, the life of 15-year-old James Lobue Jr., a male who had been reported as a runaway from Bismarck, North Dakota, was tragically cut short in a northeast Las Vegas apartment. The fatal incident occurred around 4:42 p.m. inside a condominium on Kepler Drive. Responding to a call, emergency services discovered James upstairs with a gunshot wound and transported him to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Clark County Coroner's office later determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the right arm and torso, ruling it a homicide. At the time of the shooting, James was in the apartment with several other young people. He had been staying with a friend there the night before the incident.
The investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department initially faced challenges due to a lack of immediate information. However, as detectives pieced together the events, a sequence of seemingly minor conflicts that escalated into a tragedy began to emerge. The morning of the shooting, the stepfather of the girl who lived in the apartment had become upset about several of his stepson's friends, including James, sleeping in the living room and had poured water on them to wake them up. This act angered 18-year-old Browdy Lee Shaffer, the brother of one of the friends. Shaffer later arrived at the apartment with a gun, reportedly intending to confront the stepfather. While waiting, the teenagers were in a bedroom where what was described as "play-fighting" began. During this time, Shaffer was seen showing off the firearm on a video call.
A witness reported hearing a single gunshot and then seeing James emerge from the room, injured and in pain. In the immediate aftermath, Shaffer initially tried to help James but then fled the apartment with his brother before authorities arrived. The investigation quickly pointed to Shaffer as the primary suspect, and he was arrested on September 4, 2024. He was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon. The case illustrates a devastating outcome stemming from a combination of teenage conflict and the introduction of a firearm into a volatile situation.
