In the southern part of Las Vegas, on an April evening in 2016, a verbal dispute escalated into a fatal encounter. Kevin Michael Hockar, a 54-year-old White male, was shot multiple times in the driveway of a home on Aspen Valley Avenue on Saturday, April 23rd. The altercation reportedly began in the street, where a man pushed Hockar to the ground before shooting him with what police described as an "assault-style rifle."
First responders arrived at the scene near the intersection of East
Serene Avenue and Pollock Drive shortly after 7 p.m. to find Hockar lying in the street with gunshot wounds. He was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Clark County coroner's office later officially ruled his death a homicide.
A resident of Las Vegas since 1985, Kevin Hockar was a husband and father who ran his own home improvement business, Spectrum Concepts, which he had operated since 1997. Originally from Poughkeepsie, New York, he was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy. His family remembered him as a dedicated and hard-working man who enjoyed camping and fishing.
In the days following the shooting, homicide investigators with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department identified a suspect. Rene Alfaro, 33 years old at the time, was located at a residence on Eldora Avenue. He was taken into custody without incident and booked at the Clark County Detention Center, where he faced a charge of open murder with the use of a deadly weapon. Initial reports described the suspect as a Hispanic man who had fled the scene in a newer, maroon-colored sedan.
