On a Tuesday in Bremen, Kentucky, the life of 44-year-old Mary Rachelle Mills Stewart came to a tragic end. On September 8, 2026, concerns for her welfare led deputies from the Muhlenberg County Sheriff's Department to her residence on Twin Springs Road. Just before noon, at approximately 11:40 a.m., law enforcement arrived to conduct a welfare check and made a grim discovery inside the home. Both Mary Stewart and a man identified as 57-year-old Patrick Kirk were found deceased, each having sustained gunshot wounds.

The initial response from the sheriff's department quickly escalated, and Kentucky State Police troopers were called to the scene to lead the investigation into the two deaths. Two days later, on September 10, autopsies were performed to determine the cause and manner of death for both individuals. The preliminary findings of the autopsies brought clarity to the tragic events that had unfolded within the Bremen home.

The investigation concluded that Mary Stewart's death was a homicide, and that she had been fatally shot by Patrick Kirk. Following the act of violence against Stewart, Kirk then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This determination by the Kentucky State Police characterized the incident as a murder-suicide, with Kirk as the sole suspect in Stewart's death. As the perpetrator took his own life at the scene, there were no arrests made, and consequently, no charges, trial, or convictions in the case. The investigation, led by KSP Detective Jacob Stephens, confirmed this sequence of events, and the families of both Stewart and Kirk were notified.
