In the late summer of 2026, the life of 19-year-old Quanterius Avance Elliott was cut short in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. The events that culminated in his death on Wednesday, September 16, reportedly began over a ride home. An 18-year-old Zaxby's employee, Otis Lee Johnson Jr., had given a ride to Elliott's girlfriend, who was a coworker. This seemingly simple act led to a confrontation, with Elliott allegedly going to Johnson's home to start a fight prior to the fatal encounter.
The dispute simmered, carrying over to the next day and setting the stage for a public and violent clash that would end in tragedy.
The conflict reached its peak inside the Zaxby's restaurant where Johnson worked. On that Wednesday, Elliott entered the establishment to confront Johnson again. An argument erupted, reportedly over the ride and other matters, quickly escalating into a physical fight. Amid the chaos of the fast-food restaurant, Johnson produced a gun. He fired at Elliott, killing him. In the course of the shooting, Johnson sustained a gunshot wound himself, which was reportedly self-inflicted. The sound of gunfire sent frightened customers, including children, running for cover as the altercation turned deadly.
Following the shooting, law enforcement and emergency medical services arrived at the scene. Johnson was transported to a hospital for his injuries. After his release, he was taken into custody by town police on the morning of Thursday, September 17, 2026, and charged with the murder of Quanterius Avance Elliott. It was also revealed that Johnson was wanted on prior assault charges in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
