Cameron P. Bowen, identified by relatives and several local reports as Camron Bowen, was a 16-year-old male who was fatally shot on Milwaukee’s south side on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Bowen had only recently celebrated his birthday on September 16. His family said he was a sophomore at Bay View High School who loved anime and hoped to attend college and study technology. While Milwaukee police have not publicly announced an official motive for the killing, Bowen’s mother, Jennifer Cassidy, described the shooting as an ambush and said her son was shot seven times. According to the family’s account, Bowen had been involved in a fight with another student during the previous week at school. Cassidy said the person involved in that earlier confrontation later ended up on the same bus as Bowen on the day of the shooting. She said Bowen got off the bus while heading home and was then shot. She also said her son had experienced bullying and had been defending himself and friends. These details came from Bowen’s family and had not been publicly confirmed by police as the established circumstances or motive for the homicide.
In the aftermath of the killing, family members and friends gathered near Layton Boulevard and Greenfield Avenue for a vigil. Balloons, candles, flowers and photographs were placed near the shooting scene, creating a memorial for the teenager. His mother said she had lost not only her son but someone she considered her best friend and backbone. Bowen’s aunt, Elizabeth Kutska, described him as full of light and remembered his smile and willingness to help the people he loved.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently identified the victim as Cameron P. Bowen. Family members, however, publicly referred to him as Camron, and memorial messages left near the scene called him “Cam.” His death became part of a broader public discussion in Milwaukee about shootings involving teenagers, with his family urging young people to settle conflicts without firearms.
Milwaukee police have continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not publicly identified or named a suspect, and the person described by Bowen’s family in connection with the earlier school confrontation has not been publicly charged or officially identified by police as the shooter.
