On a Tuesday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on March 8, 2022, Mario Granville, a 33-year-old Black man, was fatally shot while driving his Jeep near the intersection of 91st Street and Appleton Avenue. The gunfire caused Granville to lose control of his vehicle and crash into a light pole. When police arrived, they found him unresponsive in the driver's seat.
He was transported to a local hospital where he later died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into Granville's death quickly focused on a suspect who was believed to have been inside the vehicle with him. Surveillance video from a nearby gas station captured moments leading up to the shooting. The footage showed Granville's Jeep at a gas pump when another car pulled up. A man, later identified as Jaruthh Gathings, exited the second vehicle and got into the passenger seat of Granville's Jeep. Shortly after, another man from the second car approached the driver's side of the Jeep, at which point the Jeep accelerated quickly before crashing.
Investigators were aided in identifying Gathings because he was on extended supervision for a prior conviction and was wearing a GPS ankle bracelet. The data from the ankle monitor placed Gathings at the scene of the crime at the time of the shooting and crash. Approximately an hour after the incident, Gathings sought treatment at a hospital for a broken leg and facial injuries sustained in the crash.
Jaruthh Gathings was subsequently arrested and charged with felony murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. In January 2023, he pleaded guilty to the charges. Two months later, Gathings was sentenced to 26 years and three months in prison, to be followed by eight years and nine months of extended supervision. While the investigation suggested the involvement of a second individual who approached the driver's side of the vehicle, reports on their identification or arrest have not been made public.
