Caleb Flax, a 4-year-old boy, was asleep inside his family's home in northwest Charlotte, North Carolina, when a barrage of gunfire tore through the neighborhood during the early morning hours of September 20, 2026. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers were called to the 900 block of Grassy Patch Lane at approximately 3:00 a.m. after receiving a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators determined that gunfire had struck four occupied homes as well as several vehicles. Caleb was sleeping when bullets penetrated his home, and his family said one of the rounds struck him in the head. He was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries but was pronounced dead later that morning, at approximately 7:18 a.m.

Although only Caleb and the woman were physically wounded, police records indicated that numerous other people were inside the homes that were targeted. Sixteen people were reportedly inside the four residences, including several children and teenagers, when the shooting occurred. Three vehicles were also damaged. Officers spent hours processing the sprawling scene, and a local news crew later observed more than 100 evidence markers placed along the street.
Investigators have described multiple unknown suspects as being involved, but no individual suspects had been publicly identified or arrested as of September 23. Police had also not announced a motive or explained whether a particular home or person was believed to have been the intended target. An incident report listed potential offenses including murder, discharging a firearm into occupied property, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and property damage. The report repeatedly referenced handguns among the weapons associated with the shooting, but authorities had not released additional information identifying the firearms or linking any specific weapon to Caleb's fatal wound.
Doorbell and surveillance cameras in the neighborhood captured the sound of rapid gunfire, providing investigators with potential evidence as they worked to determine who was responsible. In the days after the killing, CMPD made an urgent public appeal for residents to turn over surveillance footage and any information that could help detectives reconstruct what happened before, during and after the shooting. Detective Trietley was identified as the lead homicide detective assigned to the case. Police continued asking witnesses and anyone with knowledge of the shooters to come forward, emphasizing that the investigation remained active and that no arrests had yet been made.
