A sense of evening quiet in the 3100 block of Milton Road in east Charlotte was shattered on Thursday, August 20, 2026, by a violent altercation that would end a life. In the midst of a dispute, 33-year-old Huber Alexander Velazquez, a man of Honduran nationality, was shot multiple times. Despite the severity of his injuries, a final surge of adrenaline propelled him nearly 200 yards from where the argument took place.
His strength, however, could only carry him so far, and he ultimately collapsed in the parking lot of a nearby supermarket.
The initial call to authorities was for a welfare check at approximately 6:28 p.m. When officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Hickory Grove Division arrived, they found Velazquez with life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders from the Charlotte Fire Department pronounced him deceased at the scene, turning a welfare check into a homicide investigation.
