In the late afternoon of Friday, August 21, 2026, the city of Gonzales, Louisiana, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the lives of two young men, including 21-year-old Jared Downey. Responding to reports of gunfire shortly after 4 p.m., Gonzales Police Department officers arrived at a residence on East Caldwell Street to a grim scene. There, they discovered the bodies of Jared Downey and 17-year-old Tegan Daigle, both having succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds.
The incident, which unfolded near Downey's home, quickly launched an intensive double homicide investigation that would soon lead to an arrest.
Investigators, utilizing witness statements and video surveillance footage, were able to piece together the events leading up to the tragic deaths. A black BMW was reportedly seen at the residence just before the shooting and was observed leaving the area shortly thereafter. This crucial piece of evidence led detectives to identify several individuals believed to be involved in the incident. With the assistance of the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, the Gonzales Police Department apprehended 17-year-old Joseph Appiah of Prairieville in connection with the double homicide. The investigation also identified two other individuals as persons of interest, and they are being interviewed to determine their level of involvement.
Joseph Appiah faces a litany of serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, principals to first-degree murder, and criminal conspiracy. Additionally, he has been charged with the manufacture, distribution, or possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I controlled dangerous substance, eight counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, and discharging a firearm within city limits. While a definitive motive has not been publicly declared, authorities have indicated that illegal drug activity played a significant role in the events that led to the shooting. Gonzales Police Chief Sherman Jackson lamented the "senseless loss of two young lives," noting that the tragedy's impact extends far beyond the victims, forever altering the lives of multiple families due to "bad decisions, drugs and violence." The case against Joseph Appiah is currently pending, and the investigation remains active as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Jared Downey and Tegan Daigle.
