However, the festive scene turned into one of horror when a dispute escalated into a mass shooting, unleashing a barrage of gunfire into the crowd. In the chaotic aftermath, numerous people were struck by bullets, and the community was left to grapple with an unimaginable tragedy. Among the critically injured was Ebanee Williams, who was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment of her life-threatening wounds. For a week, she fought for her life, but on October 17, 2025, Ebanee succumbed to her injuries, becoming the seventh fatality in the senseless act of violence.
The investigation into the Leland mass shooting was swift and intensive, with local law enforcement, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI joining forces to bring those responsible to justice. The initial stages of the investigation suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence but stemmed from a disagreement among several individuals. In the days following the tragic event, authorities began to make arrests. In total, nine individuals were taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Among them, several faced the grave charge of capital murder for their alleged roles in the deaths of the seven victims, including Ebanee Williams.
