In the small Mississippi town of Leland, a night of homecoming celebration turned into a scene of tragedy, forever marking the date of Friday, October 10, 2025. Among the lives tragically cut short was that of Shelbyona Powell, a 25-year-old Black female. The festive atmosphere of a block party, following a high school football game, was shattered by gunfire that erupted in the downtown area, leaving a community in shock and mourning.
Powell was one of six individuals who lost their lives in the mass shooting, which also left more than a dozen people injured.
The violence that unfolded appeared to stem from a disagreement between several individuals, according to the FBI. In the aftermath, law enforcement began a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice. The investigation led to the arrests of multiple suspects. Four individuals, Teviyon L. Powell, 29, William Bryant, 29, Morgan Lattimore, 25, and Terrogernal S. Martin, 33, were charged with capital murder. Another person, Latoya A. Powell, 44, faced a charge of attempted murder in connection with the deadly event.
The shooting was the deadliest of a violent weekend in Mississippi and was noted as the most fatal mass shooting in the United States for the year. The Washington County Coroner confirmed that Shelbyona Powell, along with three other victims, died at the scene. Two other victims later succumbed to their injuries. The incident left a lasting scar on the community of Leland, turning a time of celebration into one of profound loss.
