In the aftermath of a joyous high school homecoming celebration in Leland, Mississippi, tragedy befell 25-year-old Ebony Williams. On the night of October 10, 2025, what should have been a time of community revelry turned into a scene of chaos and violence. A barrage of gunfire erupted on Main Street, where a large crowd had gathered after the Leland High School homecoming football game.
In the melee, more than a dozen people were wounded, and six individuals lost their lives at the scene.
Ebony Williams was among the critically injured. She was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where she fought for her life for a week. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on October 17, 2025, becoming the seventh fatality of the mass shooting. The incident, which is believed to have stemmed from a dispute among several individuals, deeply shook the small Delta town.
In the wake of the shooting, a multi-agency investigation was launched, involving local law enforcement, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI. Their collaborative efforts led to the arrest of nine suspects in connection with the deadly event. Several of those taken into custody are facing serious charges, including capital murder. Among the individuals charged with capital murder are Teviyon L. Powell, 29; William Bryant, 29; Morgan Lattimore, 25; and Terrogernal S. Martin, 33. Another individual, Latoya A. Powell, 44, has been charged with attempted murder. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events of that tragic night, urging the public to come forward with any information that may assist in bringing all those responsible to justice.
