Shane Lee Shank, a 37-year-old man, was fatally shot during the early morning hours of July 25, 2026, in Stowe Township, Pennsylvania. Although information provided with the case described Shank as being from McKees Rocks, published reports citing the Allegheny County Medical Examiner did not list a hometown for him. The shooting occurred in Derby Alley, behind the 800 block of Broadway Avenue, an area near the Stowe and McKees Rocks business districts.
At approximately 3:01 a.m., Shank
himself called 911 and reported that he had been shot multiple times. According to the criminal complaint later filed in the case, he also told authorities that he had fired back at the person who shot him. First responders arrived in Derby Alley and found Shank suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Court records cited in news reports stated that he had been struck in the chest, thigh and arm. Emergency personnel transported him to Allegheny General Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner recorded his time of death as 3:57 a.m.
The investigation quickly focused on evidence scattered around the alley. Police reported recovering a 9mm handgun, approximately 15 spent cartridge casings, a cellphone and sets of vehicle keys. One of the key fobs led investigators to a white GMC Acadia parked roughly 200 yards from the shooting scene. Detectives traced the vehicle to its registered owner and learned through interviews that Arthur Davis of McKees Rocks had allegedly been using the SUV around the time of the killing.
Surveillance footage became another important part of the investigation. According to the criminal complaint, video showed a person running through Derby Alley around the time of the gunfire, rolling underneath a pickup truck and then continuing toward Russellwood Avenue. The person appeared to be limping as he moved away from the scene and was seen dropping keys that investigators later recovered. Other surveillance footage reportedly showed a person matching Davis getting out of the GMC before the shooting. Witnesses familiar with the vehicle also connected Davis to it.
Investigators found another connection when they contacted Davis' federal probation officer. Davis was reportedly on federal supervised release at the time of the shooting. When the probation officer called the most recent telephone number associated with Davis, police said the cellphone recovered near the shooting scene began ringing. Detectives subsequently obtained a search warrant for the GMC Acadia and reported finding mail inside addressed to Davis, adding another piece of evidence linking him to the vehicle.
Authorities also developed evidence suggesting that Shank's statement about firing back during the confrontation may have been accurate. After Davis was located, officers observed that he appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks. He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment before being lodged in jail. Investigators have alleged that Davis was the person who exchanged gunfire with Shank and then fled the alley after Shank was mortally wounded.
On July 29, Allegheny County Police detectives and deputies with the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office located Arthur Davis at a residence on Pittsburgh's North Side and took him into custody. Authorities charged him with criminal homicide and carrying a firearm without a license. Court records subsequently showed him in the Allegheny County Jail, and a judge denied bail at his preliminary arraignment on July 30.
As of the latest published reporting located for the case, Davis is the only publicly identified suspect and the only person reported arrested in connection with Shank's death. The criminal homicide and firearm charges remain accusations, and no trial, guilty plea or conviction has been reported. The available reports therefore describe the case as an active prosecution rather than a concluded criminal proceeding.
