Erick Travell Marquize Holman, a 37-year-old man, died on August 2, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina, following a tragic series of events that began with an act of kindness. Known to friends as a spoken-word artist, rapper, and poet, Holman had a reputation for being a kind and generous person. This compassionate nature led him to stop and offer a ride to a stranger in need in uptown Charlotte. That stranger was later identified as 38-year-old Rondreaus Cureton. The events that followed unfolded quickly, ending in violence that cut short a life filled with music and a passion for helping others. Just an hour before the fatal encounter, Holman had been at a spoken word and poetic rap function, immersed in the art form he loved.

According to law enforcement and court documents, after Holman allowed Cureton into his Lexus, Cureton allegedly brandished a handgun. Cureton, who later told investigators he believed people were trying to harm him, reportedly forced Holman to drive. A struggle ensued inside the moving vehicle as Holman attempted to disarm his assailant. During the struggle, the firearm discharged, and a bullet struck Holman in the head. Following the shooting, the Lexus crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of East 5th Street and North McDowell Street. First responders were initially called to the scene for a robbery and discovered the two-car crash. Holman was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was pronounced deceased. Three other individuals involved in the crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The violence did not end with the crash. After exiting the wrecked Lexus, Cureton allegedly approached another vehicle that had stopped to offer assistance. He is accused of attempting to force one of the occupants into their Buick before stealing the vehicle and fleeing the scene. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers located him approximately 40 minutes later and, after a brief pursuit, took him into custody around 1:38 a.m. on August 2nd. Cureton has been charged with a litany of offenses, including murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, common law robbery, felonious restraint, three counts of felony hit-and-run, and larceny of a motor vehicle. He is currently being held without bond in the Mecklenburg County jail, with a court appearance scheduled for August 21. The investigation into the death of Erick Holman, a man whose final act was one of compassion, remains active and ongoing.
