In the early morning hours of June 19, 2026, the life of 35-year-old Eric D. Butler was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire on the east side of Indianapolis. Responding to a call of a person shot at approximately 2:15 a.m., officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the 200 block of South Franklin Road, near the hum of Interstate 465, to find Butler inside a car, suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. This was not the first attempt on his life that year; just two months prior, on April 23, Butler had been shot a mere 0.3 miles away from where he would later be killed, an incident from which he had managed to walk away in stable condition.
To many in Indianapolis and beyond, Eric Butler was better known by his stage name, "Lil E," a prominent and influential figure in the local rap scene. He had cultivated a significant online following through his music videos and performances, with some of his tracks becoming anthems in the city. His music was often described as a raw and authentic reflection of life on the streets of Indianapolis. Friends and collaborators spoke of his talent and his potential for even greater success, mentioning that he had record deals under consideration. However, his life was also marked by frequent encounters with the law. Butler had a documented history of legal troubles, including past convictions for drug dealing and connections to a notorious drug-trafficking group known as the "Grundy crew". In February 2025, he was acquitted of several serious charges, including dealing cocaine and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The investigation into Eric Butler's murder was launched immediately by the IMPD Homicide Office. The case, however, proved difficult, with no immediate suspects or motive identified by law enforcement. In an effort to generate leads, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined the investigation, offering a $5,000 reward for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting.
