In the early morning hours of June 28, 2026, a house party at a short-term rental in the Central City neighborhood of New Orleans took a tragic turn. Inside the residence, located in the 2200 block of Louisiana Avenue, around 20 people were gathered when the sound of gunshots pierced the air from a front-side alley. The festive atmosphere instantly turned to one of chaos and fear as partygoers scrambled for safety, moving toward the back of the home.
It was then that more shots were fired, and in the ensuing panic, a 20-year-old man named Shawn Mitchell was struck by gunfire. Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and transported Mitchell to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Shawn Mitchell succumbed to his injuries on July 3, 2026. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office later identified him as the victim and officially ruled his death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, New Orleans Police Department investigators began their search for the person responsible, initially describing a suspect as an unknown man with dreadlocks who was seen wearing a long-sleeved beige shirt before fleeing the scene. The investigation into the violent end to what should have been a night of celebration continued as detectives worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
The efforts of the NOPD Homicide Section soon led to a significant breakthrough in the case. Through their investigation, detectives were able to develop probable cause and secure arrest warrants for two individuals. On July 9, 2026, a coordinated operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, and the New Orleans Police Department resulted in the apprehension of the suspects. Joseph Washington, 24, was arrested in the 4000 block of South Dells Street in Harvey and faces a charge of second-degree murder. He was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center and is awaiting extradition to Orleans Parish. The second suspect, 23-year-old Cameron Thomas, was arrested in the 7800 block of Dorsett Drive in New Orleans and was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on a charge of accessory after the fact to second-degree murder. The case is now set to move through the criminal justice system, with the investigation still considered ongoing as authorities may seek further information from the public.
