A 31-year-old man, Reginald McGinnis, lost his life on New Year's Eve 2025, in a tragic turn of events that began with him attempting to act as a good Samaritan. The incident unfolded in the 3100 block of Plymouth Place in New Orleans when McGinnis overheard a heated verbal argument between a man and his spouse. Believing he could help de-escalate the situation, he chose to intervene.
The situation, however, escalated dramatically. According to police reports, during his intervention, McGinnis allegedly choked one of the individuals involved in the dispute. In the ensuing confrontation, he was shot. First responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but the medical staff was unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead. The New Orleans Coroner's Office later officially ruled his death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound.
