In the late hours of a Sunday evening, the life of 26-year-old Dylan Perkins was tragically cut short in what began as a verbal disagreement. On June 28, 2026, in the parking lot of the Amazon fulfillment center in Matteson, Illinois, where he was a third-party vendor, Perkins was shot multiple times. The incident occurred around 10:54 p.m. at the facility located at 7001 Vollmer Road.
Perkins, a resident of Glenwood, was on a break with two colleagues near the employee bus stop when the fatal encounter unfolded.
The man who would be accused of ending Perkins' life was working as a food delivery driver that night. As the driver, identified as 33-year-old Devonta Hodge of Gary, Indiana, walked past the group to make a delivery, a comment was made about his height, sparking a verbal exchange. After dropping off the food, Hodge exited the facility and was approached by Perkins. Surveillance footage captured the moments that followed, showing Hodge pushing Perkins away on two separate occasions before the altercation turned deadly. Hodge then allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at Perkins, who collapsed to the ground. He was struck multiple times in the torso and was rushed to Olympia Fields Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the days following the shooting, investigators from the Matteson Police Department and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force worked to identify the person responsible. Their investigation led them to Devonta Hodge, who had been assigned the DoorDash delivery to the Amazon facility that night. On Tuesday, two days after the incident, Hodge went to the Matteson Police Department to meet with investigators and was subsequently taken into custody. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office later charged Hodge with murder. He was scheduled for a detention hearing following his arrest. The case against Hodge represents the pursuit of justice for a life ended over a seemingly trivial matter that escalated into a violent and irreversible tragedy.
