In the late hours of a Sunday night in North Philadelphia, the sounds of a house party near Temple University's campus were pierced by the eruption of gunfire, leaving 19-year-old Hyvear Zayzohn Tookes fatally wounded. On May 31, 2026, police were dispatched to the 1700 block of North 16th Street around 11:15 p.m. after a ShotSpotter notification alerted them to the gunshots. Upon their arrival, they were met with a chaotic scene as a large party spiraled out of control.
Many of the young attendees became confrontational with the officers, physically interfering with their attempts to investigate the shooting. The scene was littered with more than two dozen spent shell casings, a grim testament to the violence that had just unfolded, but the victim was nowhere to be found.
While officers were securing the scene and dealing with the uncooperative crowd, a rented U-Haul van arrived at Temple University Hospital. Inside were five teenagers, ranging in age from 16 to 19, who had brought a gravely wounded Hyvear Zayzohn Tookes to the emergency room. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Tookes was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. Investigators believe that the shooting was the result of a firefight between two groups. The four other teenagers who were in the U-Haul with Tookes were taken into custody by police at the hospital. However, as of early June 2026, no charges had been filed in connection with the homicide, and the identities of those detained were not released. The investigation remained active, with authorities seeking to identify other gunmen who were involved in the exchange of fire. The Philadelphia Police Department has offered a $20,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible for the death of Hyvear Zayzohn Tookes.
