In the early morning hours of June 6, 2026, the life of 22-year-old Billy Schmidt was tragically cut short on a South Philadelphia street, just steps from his family's home. A senior at Penn State University with a bright future in digital journalism and media, Schmidt was walking home around 1:30 a.m. after watching an NBA Finals game with friends at a neighborhood bar.
On the 1900 block of Durfor Street, he was confronted by two individuals in what authorities have described as an apparent robbery. The assailants stole his cell phone, and when Schmidt pursued them, asking for it back, one of the suspects fired a single shot, striking him in the chest. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The senseless act of violence sent shockwaves through the community, leaving family and friends devastated. Hundreds gathered for a vigil to remember a young man described as kind-hearted, thoughtful, and a loyal friend. Philadelphia police quickly launched an investigation, releasing surveillance footage of the two suspects to the public in an effort to identify them. In that incident, a group of suspects, one of whom was a 14-year-old who was taken into custody, allegedly stole electric scooters at gunpoint.
