In the quiet early morning hours of Monday, June 1, 2026, a tragedy unfolded inside a home on Bedlington Drive NW in Concord, North Carolina, forever altering the lives of a local family. Lester Earl Jones, a 47-year-old man, was fatally shot and pronounced dead at the scene after he stepped in to protect his 16-year-old daughter during a violent dispute. The incident began around 12:40 a.m.
when an argument between the teenager and her 17-year-old boyfriend, Keshaun Tirrell Degraffenreid, escalated into a physical assault. Responding to the commotion, Jones intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and defend his child.
The argument had reportedly turned violent, with Degraffenreid punching his girlfriend in the face. When Lester Jones tried to intervene, Degraffenreid allegedly fired a 9mm handgun multiple times. Jones was struck and killed, and his daughter sustained serious gunshot wounds. She was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment. In the immediate aftermath, Degraffenreid fled the residence on foot. Concord police officers located him on a nearby street and, after a brief chase, took him into custody. Keshaun Tirrell Degraffenreid was arrested and is being charged as an adult.
