Shane Krantz, a 29-year-old male, died on June 4, 2026, after an early morning shooting outside a Kwik Shop convenience store in Ralston, Nebraska, near 72nd and Q streets. The incident unfolded around 6:40 a.m., when Ralston police were called to the parking lot of the store at 5208 South 72nd Street for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Krantz lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound.
Emergency responders began life-saving efforts at the scene and
transported Krantz to CHI Health Bergan Mercy Hospital. Despite those efforts, he died at the hospital from his injuries. The shooting drew a large law enforcement response, with Ralston Police joined by Omaha Police, La Vista Police, and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office as investigators worked to secure the scene and begin piecing together what had happened.
Investigators later said the shooting appeared to follow an altercation involving a suspect in another vehicle. Witnesses who were reportedly in a car with Krantz told officers that someone who knew him drove up to the location, started a confrontation, and then shot him in the chest. Police indicated the circumstances suggested a targeted encounter rather than a random act of violence, and they said there was no known continuing danger to the public.
The investigation quickly focused on George Hatfield, 45, who was identified in Douglas County Court records as the suspect wanted in connection with Krantz's death. A warrant was issued for Hatfield on charges that included second-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Hatfield was arrested two days later, on Saturday morning, at an apartment complex in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Council Bluffs Police and the U.S. Marshals Service took him into custody as a fugitive from justice. After the arrest, he was held in the Pottawattamie County Jail while awaiting extradition to Nebraska. Reports indicated he did not face local Iowa charges connected to the arrest, but the Nebraska warrant tied him to the fatal shooting of Krantz.
Krantz's death left the Ralston and Omaha-area community shaken, partly because the shooting happened in a public parking lot during the morning rush. What began as a confrontation between people who reportedly knew each other escalated into fatal violence within moments, leaving Krantz critically wounded before first responders could save him.
