In the spring of 2026, the life of a 50-year-old woman, Monica Olivarez Hughes, was brought to a tragic and violent end in her Houston, Texas apartment. The events that concluded with her death began to unfold on the evening of March 29th, when neighbors heard the chilling sound of gunshots emanating from her residence at 2831 Laura Koppe Road. Shortly after the shots were heard, a man, believed to be Monica's boyfriend, was seen leaving the apartment alone.
It wasn't until the following
afternoon, on March 30th, that the grim discovery was made. Personnel from the Houston Fire Department responded to a "person down" call at the apartment and found Monica Olivarez Hughes unresponsive inside. She was pronounced deceased at the scene, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences later formally identified the victim.
Houston Police Department's Homicide Division immediately launched an investigation into the suspicious death. Based on witness statements from neighbors who heard the gunshots and saw the man leaving, investigators quickly focused on Monica's boyfriend, 48-year-old Eric Eugene Goosby, as the primary suspect. As the investigation progressed, detectives with the HPD Homicide Division were able to gather enough evidence to identify Goosby as the individual responsible for the shooting.
In consultation with the Harris County District Attorney's Office, charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon were filed against Eric Eugene Goosby. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and a search for him began. On April 2nd, a collaborative effort involving officers from the HPD South Central Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team, the Northeast Patrol Division Hotspot Team, the Metro Police Department, and the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force culminated in Goosby's apprehension. He was taken into custody and booked into the Harris County jail, bringing a swift, albeit somber, development to the investigation into the death of Monica Olivarez Hughes.
