Andrew Ladeartis Jackson, a 39-year-old Black man from Memphis, Tennessee, died after a shooting on March 29, 2026. The case began just after midnight when officers were called to Methodist University Hospital for a shooting victim. Jackson had arrived there in a 2018 black Infiniti with a gunshot wound to the torso, and despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Investigators traced the shooting back to the parking lot of the Hillview Apartments in South
Memphis. Police said Jackson had been with Kimberly Annette Cooper and another man inside the vehicle before the shooting. The group had reportedly been hanging out at the apartment complex before going to a club, and Jackson had fallen asleep in the back seat. When he woke up, an argument began between him and Cooper over whether they would be sexually involved that night.
The confrontation escalated around the passenger side of the Infiniti. According to the reported witness account, Cooper got into the passenger seat and locked the door. When the passenger door later opened, the witness said he heard a gunshot and saw Jackson fall to the ground. After the gun fired, Cooper allegedly said she was sorry and claimed she did not mean to shoot him, reportedly adding that she did not know the safety was not on. Jackson, wounded and confused, allegedly asked, “Why you shoot me? I was playing.”
After the shooting, Cooper and the male witness took Jackson to the hospital. Police spoke with both of them there. Cooper was identified as the woman who had arrived with Jackson, and the male witness told investigators that Cooper was the one who shot him. Officers also reported that Cooper was sitting in the passenger seat of the Infiniti when they encountered her, and she allegedly told them her firearm was on the floorboard. A black and tan gun was recovered from the vehicle.
Cooper later told investigators that Jackson had choked her and that she was not going to allow him to hit her. She said that after the alleged choking, she got into the passenger seat, locked the door, and then shot Jackson when she opened the door while he was standing outside on the passenger side. Investigators noted that when Cooper was asked whether she had any marks or injuries, she reportedly responded, “Why would I have injuries if I have a gun?” Crime scene investigators examined her neck and said they did not find visible injuries or marks. Cooper also reportedly stated that they would not find any because she would not let a man put his hands on her.
Kimberly Annette Cooper was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Jackson's death. Reports identify her as 36 years old at the time of the charge. Bond information has been reported inconsistently, with some reports listing it at $100,000 and others at $500,000. She was expected to appear in court in late April 2026 as the case moved into the Shelby County criminal court system. No additional suspects have been publicly identified in the available reports.
