His heart was so large that he was said to have more than fifty "best friends," and his smile could light up any room. His parents, who had adopted him as an infant, fostered a welcoming home, often taking in children who needed support and showing them what love was like.
Chris embodied this spirit of generosity, a trait that would tragically set the stage for the end of his young life.
Just before the end of March 2026, Chris asked his parents if a friend, also 13, could stay with them because he had nowhere else to sleep. The Carneros, true to their nature, opened their home. But on the evening of March 30th, a nightmare unfolded inside what was supposed to be a safe space. While sitting in his own room, Chris was struck by a bullet in the back of his head. The weapon was not one belonging to the family; it had been brought into the house by the very friend they had taken in. The boy was reportedly handling the firearm when it discharged. Chris was airlifted to a hospital in El Paso in critical condition.
Las Cruces police quickly located the young suspect near Picacho Middle School and took him into custody. Authorities described the boy as a frequent runaway who was known to possess firearms and had been linked to auto burglaries where guns were often stolen. He was arrested and faced a charge of involuntary manslaughter, along with charges for negligent use of a deadly weapon and being a minor in possession of a firearm. Under New Mexico law at the time, a 13-year-old could not be tried as an adult, no matter the gravity of the crime.
Christopher Carnero was declared brain dead and passed away on April 3, 2026. Even in death, his giving spirit shone through as his family chose to donate his organs. The community was left reeling from the loss of a boy described as a beautiful soul. His family, supported by community members, local leaders, and law enforcement, held a press conference to channel their grief into a call for action.
