On a tragic day in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the life of Edgar Segovia, a 29-year-old male, was abruptly ended. On December 19, 2020, Segovia was found shot to death in his vehicle in his driveway. A recent graduate, he had earned his master's degree in marriage and family therapy from New Mexico State University just months prior in May 2020 and was embarking on his career path.
The investigation into his death swiftly led to the arrest of 71-year-old Santiago Rascon two days later.
Rascon was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of tampering with evidence in connection with Segovia's death. The motive behind the killing appeared to be a misguided act of revenge. Rascon told investigators he believed Segovia was responsible for the death of his son, Emilio, who was Segovia's neighbor and had died on July 4, 2020.
Rascon claimed that individuals at Segovia's residence had harassed his son prior to his death. On the day of the shooting, Rascon alleged that he became angered when he believed the neighbors were writing down his license plate number. He then retrieved a gun from his home, returned, and shot Segovia as he sat in his vehicle. Following the incident, Rascon drove to his daughter's house and confessed to her that he had killed someone to avenge his son's death. His daughter then contacted the police, leading to Rascon's surrender. Rascon later pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his attorney requested a psychiatric evaluation to determine his fitness to stand trial.
