Shortly after, that man and another man, both dressed in dark clothing, brandished guns and opened fire into the car as Mays attempted to drive away. Mays was struck in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Brianna, was shot in the leg and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their child, who was in a car seat, was not physically harmed. After being shot, Mays' last words to his family were, "I love you guys, but I was shot."
The investigation into the death of Deven Mays led to the identification of two suspects. Eighteen-year-old Miles Isaiah Spivey was arrested and faces multiple felony charges, including open murder, robbery with a deadly weapon, and firing into an occupied vehicle. According to police, Spivey's attorney arranged for him to turn himself in days after the shooting, and he was reportedly wearing the same shoes seen in surveillance footage from the night of the incident. The second suspect was identified as Daequan McGee. A warrant was issued for McGee's arrest, and it was noted that he was on juvenile parole for a prior armed carjacking in which Spivey was a co-defendant.
