On a Saturday night in Las Vegas, the life of Ray James Davis Jr., a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On March 29, 2025, police responded to multiple reports of a shooting on West Chicago Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Davis in a courtyard, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led to the swift arrest of his 47-year-old neighbor, Alexander Ayres.
Ayres and Davis were known to be acquaintances who frequently spent time together. However, their relationship took a dark turn in the week leading up to the fatal incident. Ayres confessed to detectives that he had become convinced Davis was poisoning him with drugs, a delusion that ultimately led him to plan and carry out the murder.
In his confession, Ayres admitted to regular use of marijuana, alcohol, and methamphetamine, including on the day of the shooting. He described experiencing delusions, such as believing parasites were in his fingernails and hair, for which he held Davis responsible. On that Saturday evening, Ayres shot Davis through his front screen door before opening it to fire several more times. He expressed no remorse for his actions to the authorities.
Alexander Ayres was taken into custody and booked at the Clark County Detention Center. He faces multiple charges, including open murder with the use of a deadly weapon, two counts of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, and possession of a gun with an altered or removed serial number. His next court appearance was scheduled for the following Wednesday. The tragic event has left the community grappling with the devastating consequences of untreated mental health issues and substance abuse.
