Deron L. McGee, a 39-year-old male from Syracuse, New York, died after a daylight shooting on April 8, 2026, in the area of Warner Avenue and Webster Avenue on the city’s south side. Police responded around 3 p.m. after reports of gunfire, and officers found McGee suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital, but he died shortly after arriving.
The shooting unfolded in the middle of the afternoon, leaving the intersection blocked by
crime-scene tape as investigators worked through the scene. Evidence markers were placed near spent shell casings, and members of the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office were also present inside the investigation area. A 10-year-old boy was also grazed by a bullet during the same incident, though his injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
McGee’s death carried another painful connection to violence in Syracuse. He was identified in reports as the father of Deron McGee Jr., a 15-year-old who had been shot in August 2024 and later died from his injuries. In that earlier case involving McGee’s son, three teenagers were arrested and charged in connection with the killing. Those arrests were tied to the 2024 homicide of Deron McGee Jr., not to the April 2026 killing of Deron L. McGee.
As for Deron L. McGee’s own homicide, police had not announced any arrests or released suspect descriptions in the immediate aftermath. The case remained under investigation, and authorities asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Syracuse Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
