On a Thursday afternoon, April 9, 2026, the life of 33-year-old Rashaun Hopkins, a Black male, was tragically cut short by gunfire on the Upper West Side of New York City. The shooting took place just before 5 p.m. in front of an apartment building at 53 West 104th Street, between Columbus and Manhattan avenues. Hopkins, a resident of the nearby NYCHA Frederick Douglass Houses on Amsterdam Avenue, was only a few blocks from his home when he was shot multiple times in the chest.
Officers
from the 24th Precinct arrived at the scene to find Hopkins with grave injuries. He was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, but the medical staff could not save him, and he was pronounced dead. The brazen daylight shooting prompted an immediate and thorough investigation by the New York Police Department.
Eyewitnesses reported a suspect, described as a male with a dark complexion dressed in all black, fleeing the scene on a moped. The suspect was last seen heading westbound on West 104th Street. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and the investigation remains active as authorities continue to search for a motive and the individual responsible for Rashaun Hopkins's death.
